Acrylics

accusing as dogs
which you haven't been walking
all evening,
they stand on the coffee table
in rows
in their flat
cardboard box.

marshalled bright colours,
acrylics, like men
dressed as old –
fashioned soldiers,
arranged in a courtyard
on a sun –
shine parade.

I pick up a canvas
but can't see the picture;
I just see a canvas
instead.

DS Maolalai is from Ireland. His first collection, Love is Breaking Plates in the Garden, was published in 2016 by the Encircle Press, and his second, Sad Havoc Among the Birds, by Turas Press in 2019.
