RICHARD MANLY HEIMAN Excerpted Old librarians go the last place they recall. To die. Surrounded by dank wood chips. Osculating beloved wrens. Tracks where midnight freights pass once. Plunge through greasy river ice. Prehistoric. When a stranger checks in – rock hard pillow. Stale donuts at eight. Rabbit- eared TV. Voyeur sans intent. 12, hurl cement chips at aspens. Because. They crucified our Lord. Smoke another Pall Mall down at seven. Quaker. Shaker. Sluggo. Plain Catholic. Lot 53. Inspiring Robespierre. The nude sibyl in the shed whispers: elephant. mallard. sound stage. abandon. cocktail hour. cancel. shhhhhh— Moon Face Explains Himself Again (After Joan Miro) Our pilgrimage – we piggyback ensemble in sleek canoes and later die to tell about it. Through a shop window onto your life a hirsute ballerina grabs your eye. I think you pregnant, in an angular way. All curves no tetrahedrons make hearts grow fonder. Over the falls. Chaise chair love without regrets. I hustle you toward your stillbirth anyway. How else to simplify? The black hole swallows itself, belches and opens its own salon. Well, here come Ezekiel's wheels, you sigh for the nineteenth time. I really should be going. Yes. The cosmic joke of it all, that you or I should ever go anywhere – stuck here like fossils in the dirty sky we coyly emblazon for ourselves. Ecce Eyespots Form fitting grave-shift clothes. No napkin on your face you look mufti. Fresh as twenty centuries. Chiffon predator-mimic wings unfolding aura, russet chrysalis book. Baby-wrapped so tight so soon. A golem's excavated heart, elusive parcel. Divine genome, free delivery. Peeking veined diaphanous ribbon. Still-birthed crime in progress. How will they ever pronounce your name? Richard Manly Heiman lives on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada. He works as a substitute teacher, and writes when the kids are at recess. His work has been published by Rattle, Rust + Moth, Into the Void, Sonic Boom and elsewhere. He holds an MFA from Lindenwood University. |
