SARA BACKER Pollen Pines shake yellow dust on puddles, on windshields. Magic powder goes from nose to brain and plays erasure games. The... is blowing in the... wine? I sneeze Machu Picchu, pray like a Buddhist, full body to floor. I lift my head to a... mirror? speckled with yellow...? And there's a praying mantis! Cockroach claws, triangle head, alien eyes in corners, a tiny dot in each, its hook of a jaw. This is what I have become. A living stick that crawls on a stem, prowling for insects and... sex? My head swivels wrong way round. Sara Backer lives in New Hampshire, USA. Her collection of poetry is entitled Such Luck (Flowstone Press, 2019). She has also published two poetry chapbooks and a novel, American Fuji (Penguin Putnam). |
