E. MARTIN PEDERSEN In the Bowels In the bowels of the earth A molten metal ball Shining mercury silver Hot and radioactive As if the earth had eaten Too much tuna fish From over in the Fukushima Daiichi general area Where there's been some ionic stress lately Making digestion difficult Trapped Gassy-ocious Heavy metals lead and arsenic Sinking to the bottom Linger and fester In a colon that's been blocked for 200 billion years Waiting for the next big bang. E. Martin Pedersen, originally from San Francisco, has lived for over 40 years in eastern Sicily, where he taught English at the local university. His poetry appeared most recently in Adirondack Review, Better Than Starbucks, Brief Wilderness, Danse Macabre, Thirteen Myna Birds. He is an alumnus of the Community of Writers. He has published two collections of haiku, Bitter Pills and Smart Pills, and a chapbook, Exile's Choice, just out from Kelsay Books. A full collection, Method & Madness, is forthcoming from Odyssey Press. |
