Enemy
of the Moment
Corpse-looking boles, their verdure...
Every wet leaf is a mirror
showing an error. Have I made a few?
Because the pursuers... because their
blunder-stained uniforms...
But how? But why? Who am I
according to the Aryan aridity law?
My noctumbulant self has crossed a few
mental borders. Bird songs have got caught
in a vast symphony canvas, but I
keep upping the sticks in the dust
of oblivion, to no purpose.
Down which valley will my vacancy roll?
In which tongue will my past
speak to my future?
A spider web with swarthy planets...
The chasers' shadows are good
at languages. Better than my identikit.
Viking Breath
How does it feel to be the Cultural Attaché
for the South Pole, the ice
of the voiceless?
No encyclopaedia will give you shelter.
As life drifts by, the waters ache
and pallid faces pore out from every porthole.
Winter is inside us; it's tasty
like a sea onion.
Who will get the first bite?
Crunchy things creak around us:
the shore, the bleak frosty sun,
the clouds glistening like Santa's beard.
Amundsen has sailed into a greater crispness.
Penguins are chanting defiant slogans
outside our red tents.
What are we waiting for?
What is sprouting up
in our hoar-frosted hearts?
The
Visitation
The soil knows everything.
—Sheer Klein
I was biding inside trees
sleeping with the starlight on.
Death called on me disguised
as a victory, but I didn't recognise
his vacant face. I didn't
feel the breath of momentum,
my thoughts enmeshed
around the pains of the day.
He left his calling card
and retreated.
The following days formed the gate
of abandonment. Where branches met,
there were boulevards of darkness.
I was a dead language. Don't
go astrophysical on me!
The hills and valleys of the perishable...
My sight passerines soar above them. My feet
still tread on explanations.
The questions our lives essay to answer;
the questions no one asks.
