Everybody would have
listened to that Jersey Giant
announce the firmament
plummeting down onto our heads
in a rich baritone, deep
as an asteroid crater—
like Orson Welles
on the radio, warning
of made-up Martians
and making everyone turn
away from each other
to gawk at the welkin
with worry and wonder.
